I felt the opposite as you described concerning Your Name vs Weathering With You for the same reasons which put Your Name above it for me. That's crazy how it's for the same reasons but in reverse. I saw it in theaters so it may need a personal re-watch. Love the analysis.

Tenki no ko review. Kimi no nawa in my mind is a solid 9, and weathering with you is a solid 8, its still great but there are some things which irritates me and makes me just go "why. just. WHY. some HUGE spoilers are ahead though ill be as vague as i can
The Story (huge spoilers. br> its good i tell you, the simplest backstory i can give is that the main character story are similar, trying very hard to live & survive in tokyo
but there is a huge, i mean HUUGE foreshadowing early on, and somewhere in the middle, there is another foreshadowing/explanation which IMO kills the element of surprise/twist, when the characters met for the second time she didnt hide her skill, she just shows it to him & he understands because of the huge foreshadowing early on.
moving on to the next bit
because of what both of them did, some stuff happens and after she was told by another character about something then she told him that "something" is happening to her
reaching the climax of the story, he confesses to her, she ask his wish, she granted his wish but he changes his mind and blame himself for that "wish" and try to "turn things back as it were"
oh also i should mention that this movie plays a lot with morals during the climax, and its that bit which plays with your emotion
Art/Animation
its very good and there are lots of attention to detail
but still, because the setting is on a capital city, there is not much creative freedom before it doesnt look like a capital city, unlike your name, which has more freedom because countryside, and the setting/weather, i know right, very obvious) most of the time its gloomy and rainy but it fits the theme for most part of the movie (again obvious)
one thing i hate the most is the cut to black with a "long" interval, because it tends to switch a scene which is bright AF without any fading, its blinding
sound/soundtrack:
i like it, but then again its personal opinion by this point, it fits the "gloomy&rainy" style of the movie but your name OST is better & more memorable IMO, sound design in pretty much excellent as i cant really see a flaw in it, like the visuals, there are lots of attention to detail
final thoughts:
its a solid movie, the ending is pretty much a clear happy ending romance wise but a huge "ummm" for the consequences to get that happy ending and its kinda depressing but the side characters tries to convice the protagonist that "the world is a crazy place" and not their fault
i kinda like this ending, its clear, not indecisive like your name,
the shots of the city near the ending is a possible worst case scenario of what could happen if we just keep doing what we are doing and do nothing to try to change the global climate.

Hodaka's reason for leaving home is never explained. Neither is Hina's relation with any surviving relatives she may have, or where her dad is after her mom died and she started living alone with Nagi. Shinkai probably didn't deem it relevant to the plot at hand. While we know Hodaka got sent back under a sort of house arrest until graduation, little is mentioned of Hina and Nagi's fate during those three years, what of their guardianship. Kei looks to have maintained contact with Hina and Nagi, as seen from one of the photos in the epilogue. Shinkai subverts his usual Older Female MC trope (as seen in Garden of Words and Your Name) by having Hina lie about her age. Ever since Your Name, Shinkai seems to have a penchant for destroying the world his characters live in. First he destroys Mitsuha's hometown with a meteor, now he turns Tokyo into Waterworld. Nagi is smooth at his age. No wonder Hodaka calls him senpai. lol Nagi's "girlfriends" Kana and Ayane are voiced by Hanazawa Kana and Sakura Ayane respectively. Cop with Elvis hair is voiced by Kaji Yuki. Your Name cameos Taki - Taki's grandmother is one of Hina's clients. With Taki himself also appearing. In epilogue, Taki's grandmother moved to higher ground, the apartment name plate clearly lists her surname as Tachibana. Mitsuha - Works at a department store where Hodaka buys a ring as Hina's birthday present. Her nameplate clearly reads Miyamizu. Tesshi and Sayaka - Hina's first assignment as Fair-Weather Girl at the seaside park. They can be seen sitting inside a ferris wheel looking outside (their backs towards camera). Yotsuha - After Hina "sacrifices" herself in order to restore the weather to normal, Yotsuha is one of the schoolgirls commenting on how fine the weather is. Timeline (and relation with Your Name) One of the Tweets seen in the movie clearly marks the date as August 22nd 2021, the day Hina "sacrificed". So it's safe to conclude that this movie takes place during summer of 2021, the main story concludes on August 23rd 2021, a day after Hina's birthday. Epilogue is in 2024. Your Name may or may not be in the same universe as Weathering With You. Meteor destroys Itomori in 2013. Epilogue of Your Name is "8 years after meteor disaster" = 2021. (Briefly mentioned in Kei's occult magazine cover as well) Taki and Mitsuha reunited in the spring after 2021, sometime ~2022. But in Your Name, the streets are hardly flooded or showed any signs of raining, which strongly suggests Weathering With You may be in an alternate timeline.
