As the movie opens, it is "1975 Parkersburg, West Virginia" as we see several teenagers (one of them a young Bilott) go swimming in a lake that we later see being sprayed with chemicals. We then go to "1998 Cincinnati, Ohio" and Rob has just made partner at Taft, one of the large law firms in Cincinnati. Then a stranger shows up who is from Parkersburg and knows Rob's grandmother. The stranger, Wilbur Tennant, claims that chemicals have ruined his farm, he has the VHS tapes to prove it, and can Rob please represent him. At this point we're 10 min. into the movie, but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all turns out. Couple of comments: this is the latest movie from Todd Haynes, whose prior movie, the excellent "Carol" was coincidentally also filmed here in Cincinnati (where I live. But that is where the comparisons stop. Here, Haynes brings to the big screen the long battle that Bilott fought against chemical giant DuPont. The film starts a bit tentative in my opinion, but after the first half hour, the tension doesn't let up as DuPont is fighting with all of its might against Bilott. This movie is a labor of love for Mark Ruffalo, who stars and also co-produces. I've seen a lot of the films that Ruffalo has made in his career, and I don't know that he's ever been better, playing the almost mousy yet determined lawyer. Anne Hathaway seems underused as the supportive spouse but as the movie goes deeper, her role expands. The movie was filmed in early 2019 in and around Cincinnati, and the downtown area is featured extensively, including Fountain Square, the Queen City Club, the Hall of Mirrors at the Netherland Plaza, etc. The movie had a red carpet premiere here in Cincinnati a week before it got a limited release. This weekend it got a wide release, and the Friday early evening screening where I saw it at my art-house theater here in Cincinnati was attended okay (about 20 people. The writing, acting, directing, and cinematography are all superb. This is one of the best movies of 2019. THE DOORS: BREAK ON THRU – A CELEBRATION OF RAY MANZAREK is a hybrid concert and documentary capturing a 2016 performance in Los Angeles, CA by surviving Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger to honor fellow Doors member Ray Manzarek on what would have been his birthday on February 12th. The Doors were born when Ray Manzarek met Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in 1965. Ray became the beating heart of The Doors and the architect of their intoxicating keyboard sound. Manzareks evocative playing fused rock, jazz, blues, bossa nova and an array of other styles into something utterly, dazzlingly new. Vivid with exceptional imagery, drug use metaphor, psychedelic musical composition, and amazing vocals, this is a great example of everything The Doors do the best, and all on the same track. Jim Morrison was way into his psychedelics, and this is most likely a reference on LSD use, and the presumption that it helps users to have that breakthrough… Getting out of (social) reality, drawing new connections and acquiring a clearer image of whats going on. After such an epiphany, one could claim that they passed on to the other side. Its worth mentioning that the name The Doors itself, was inspired by Aldous Huxleys novel The Doors of Perception which contains accounts of the authors mescaline trips. Aldous Huxley borrowed the title of his book from a stanza in William Blake s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.
Seems like all the Doors books, documentaries, and the film all focus so much on Morrison. I've always felt Manzarek was equally important in the Doors creation, sound and mythos.

Depuis peu j'aime beaucoup ecouter Adèle pour son contenu mais aussi sa forme. Elle a une reflexion philosophique et psychologique sur sa pratique artistique toujours en lien avec des interrogations personnelles engageantes. Et il y a cette prise en compte dans sa reflexion des differentes dimensions. C'est un exercice cérébrale qui demande une grande energie et qui s'exprime naturellement dans sa pratique artistique. Elle va au delà, elle creuse plutot que de repondre simplement ou jouer tel quel au 1er abord. En cela je la trouve vraiment captivante et j'aimerai tellement ecouter plus d'interview de type débats. Elle a une justesse et une maturité dans ses propos qui amène aussi à nous interroger plutôt qu'à simplement ecouter. Elle invite au débat, nous ne sommes pas seulement que dans la transmission avec elle. C'est mon point de vu personnel mais c'est super enrichissant et nourrissant. Mais aussi frustrant car j'aimerai aussi lui poser des questions et échanger et partager avec elle. C'est frustrant. Bref pour faire court : veritable orgasme cérébrale.
