ET Blood on Her Name Directed by Matthew Pope Crime, Drama, Thriller 1h 25m We’re introduced to Leigh (Bethany Anne Lind) in her dank auto shop, gazing, panic-stricken, at the body of a man and his spreading pool of blood. The murder, she will later claim, was in self-defense; but, instead of burning, burying or drowning the corpse — an oversight her estranged father (Will Patton), the town sheriff, will furiously berate her for — Leigh wraps it neatly in plastic sheeting and drives it to the man’s home. “He’s in the shed, ” reads the note she leaves in the mailbox for his son and girlfriend. “I’m sorry. ” Such is the setup for “Blood on Her Name, ” a greasy thriller from Matthew Pope that, notwithstanding Lind’s impressive, high-anxiety performance, plays like a checklist entitled “How Not to Get Away With Murder. ” Everything Leigh does is stupid, from her carelessness with fingerprints and jewelry, to her inability to keep her mouth or her facial expressions under control. Her teenage son (Jared Ivers) is on parole, his father is in jail, and Leigh has a habit of popping pills and alienating those — like her concerned mechanic (Jimmy Gonzales) — who want to help. Oppressively dark and unrelentingly intense, “Blood on Her Name” packs down-and-dirty performances, and a few surprises, into a tight 85 minutes. Almost everyone here is morally compromised, if not completely lawless, and the movie creates a world where poverty and violence are genetic inheritances. Pope and his co-writer, Don M. Thompson, are most interested in what happens when conscience gets the better of common sense, and human decency asserts itself over the will to survive. Is it becoming a thing to just summarize the whole movie in the trailer now, cause if it is just tell us and we won't think some studio's and editors are incompetent. Blood on her name movie trailer. | Odie Henderson February 28, 2020 Noir is full of characters doing unreasonable, unwise or just downright stupid things to achieve some untenable goal. Their choices are criminal, driven by the basest instincts and are often wrapped in a delightful, hardboiled amorality. The plot situations escalate, tightening the screws as the antiheroes become more and more desperate. These people inhabit a bitter little world where there are no happy endings. Everybody has a fatal flaw and doing the right thing never crosses anyone’s mind. The self-described “Southern Gothic neo-noir” “Blood on Her Name” attempts to tweak some of the aforementioned qualities of noir by saddling its protagonist with a conscience. It’s a bad decision that might have worked had co-writer and director Matthew Pope structured the film differently. What starts out as an intriguing cover-up of a murder becomes more and more hopelessly convoluted by the film’s insistence on delivering its information to you in drips and drabs. Allowing the viewer to piece things together on their own is always welcome, but the film’s desire to surprise and outwit makes it contrived. Advertisement Leigh ( Bethany Anne Lind) is beholden to doing right by folks, whether it’s her juvenile delinquent son, Ryan ( Jared Ivers) or the family of a man whose murder she may have committed in self-defense. Not that she’s a saint—at times, she lashes out unfairly in anger and she’s on some kind of pills whose dose, according to her dealer, depends on how much she wants to forget. She’s also the ex of a convicted felon whose arrest had something to do with turning her place of business into a chop shop. Those illegal activities come back to haunt her immediately after fade-in. Aided by the moody and atmospheric color cinematography by Matthew Rogers, “Blood on Her Name” opens with a riveting post-murder sequence. The victim lays in a huge puddle of congealed blood on the floor of an auto garage, a bloodied wrench near his body. We hear Leigh’s terrified, labored breathing on the soundtrack before we see her huddled in a corner. The pacing is very good here, allowing us to watch as Leigh considers the best course of action. She wraps the body, cleans up the crime scene, takes the weapon of choice and hauls ass out of there. She disposes of the wrench in the lake as she paddles across it in a boat, but takes the body with her. It’s clear that Leigh is no master criminal, but she makes mistakes that would get you an F in Committing Crime 101. For starters, her auto body shop has a security camera and has recorded the entire murder. She tosses the CPU into the dumpster without even bothering to erase it. I can buy that part, I mean, this is a small town and it’s doubtful anyone would go dumpster diving for tech products. What she does next I most certainly did not buy. She disposes of the body in the house of the man’s relatives, leaving an anonymous note in their mailbox that basically says “My bad! Sorr-reee! ” “They deserved to know, ” she tells her estranged father, Officer Richard Tiller ( Will Patton). Otherwise, it would have weighed on her conscience. “Blood on Her Name” tries to justify this by presenting several flashbacks featuring a young Leigh ( Chandler Head) and Tiller. Seems her dad’s a corrupt cop, placing him firmly in the trenches of noir. Sometimes Leigh talks to her younger self, other times she walks into these flashbacks and observes. It’s a clunky device but these scenes are well shot and edited. Officer Tiller murdered a suspect in cold blood, then apparently disposed of the body. I assume that Leigh’s childhood concern that the victim’s family were left with no clue of his whereabouts contributed to her decision to hand deliver his corpse. But noiristas like me gotta wonder: If your Dad’s corrupt, on the police force, and is adept at making bodies disappear, wouldn’t you call him if you were in the most dire of straits? He seems to be the only cop in town, too. We’re led to believe that her resistance stems from not wanting to figuratively sell her soul to the Devil, but considering her situation, Satan already has her soul on layaway. One of the smarter things “Blood on Her Name” does is not re-stage the murder for us. All we see is the aftermath; the details are eventually filled in using dialogue. Of course, it turns out that this is a more complicated crime than we were first led to believe, and Pope and his co-writer Don M. Thompson add a protective, maternal dynamic to the proceedings that only works during the film’s climactic showdown between Leigh and Dani ( Elisabeth Röhm), the wife of the slain man. Röhm and Lind are excellent in their scenes together, all of which stem from a missing piece of jewelry plot device lifted straight from Hitchcock’s “ Frenzy. ” Of the male characters, Tiller is the only one who feels like he came with the neo-noir territory. Patton plays him with an unnerving menace mixed with crime-ridden common sense. Jimmy Gonzales is wasted as the clichéd minority whose sole existence is devoted to helping out the White lead, though at least he doesn’t get that character’s usual destiny and he has some chemistry with Ivers. “Blood on Her Name” is really onto something with Dani and Leigh’s Mama Bears protecting their cubs subplot, but by the time Leigh realizes she’s truly a chip off her Papa’s old block, too much frustration with her character had set in for me. The film may not be as complex as its filmmaker clearly intended it to be. It functions perfectly fine as an atmospheric bit of pulp fiction with the lead imbuing it with a much-needed emotional resonance. In other words, it doesn’t quite draw blood, but you’ll surely remember her name. “Within seconds, we see Leigh in her garage, having just bludgeoned a man to death. ” And her name is Leigh Tiller, mother of delinquent Ryan (Jared Ivers), daughter of emotionally abusive Sheriff Richard (Will Patton), ex-wife of a hoodlum. Within seconds, we see Leigh in her garage, having just bludgeoned a man to death. She’s about to dial 911 but slides the garage door shut instead. She then methodically – albeit in a state of muted panic – cleans up the mess. Before she disposes of the wrapped-up body in a nearby lake, a cell-phone rings in its pocket – a message from the victim’s son. This sends Leigh on a guilt-ridden downward spiral, wherein she returns the body to its family. A lost necklace acts as a catalyst to Leigh’s already rapidly-escalading anxiety. Both her son and dad get involved, along with sort-of boyfriend Rey (Jimmy Gonzalez), and the victim’s wife Dani (Elisabeth Rohm) and son Travis (Jack Andrews). The slightly-overblown finale dutifully serves poetic justice.

We cheer at his bravery, cringe at his awkwardness, and root for his exoneration.
Sam Rockwell is very good as his acquaintance that takes up the defense as his lawyer. It's too bad about the controversy surrounding Olivia Wilde's character since she's also good in this.
As far as Eastwood's recent biographical films go, it's a very good movie which takes an underdog approach to the main character. It's not as good as American Sniper but I enjoyed it more than Sully.

Beneath Us boasts the kind of premise that begs to described as “provocative and timely. ” Others may peg it as “misguided and exploitative. ” But billing it as “clumsy if well-intentioned” is as generous a description as it deserves. Aiming to be a kind of Get Out for undocumented day laborers (an unjust comparison if there ever was one), the Max Pachman-directed thriller begins when a group of four such workers are picked up by a seemingly clueless white woman outside of a hardware store. They’re cheap labor and, though they gawk and catcall her in the car on the way to her house, they all come to a mutually beneficial agreement: they’ll work for her on her property for a fraction of the price she was planning to pay a contractor. Soon enough though the four men begin to realize they may have stepped into something much more sinister — their employers are used to making a killing, quite literally, when it comes to flipping houses using undocumented labor. Yes, this is a film wherein Mexicans are kidnapped and terrorized by a racist white couple eager to exploit them and then discard them. It’s no surprise that in the run-up to its release the low-budget thriller has already tried to capitalize on its buzzy premise. Taking a page out of The Hunt  (that movie about rich people hunting poor people that got delayed after earning its fair share of Internet hate last year),  Beneath Us  has been openly courting that kind of controversy. On Twitter, the film’s marketing has been sharing a riff on The Hunt ‘s own provocative poster where instead of sharing positive reviews, they share outraged reactions (“Make white people look bad again, ” “What in the white people? ” “Keeping the division alive”). This is a project that is keen to raise eyebrows; it wants to feed on a collective sense of outrage about what kinds of stories get to make it to the screen. And, more to the point, what real-life horrors deserve the horror film treatment. We’ll raise you one — Beneath Us (@BeneathUsFilm) February 12, 2020 Because make no mistake:  Beneath Us  will feed into whatever political fears you already hold. There’s a discomforting “both sides-ism” running through this sun-dappled horror thriller which deploys its blunt metaphors all too earnestly. As a way to signal that Liz Rhodes (Lynn Collins) is comfortable not just exploiting the day laborers she’s hired but actively loathes their mere existence, Pachman and his co-writer Mark Mavrothalasitis have her dealing with a rat infestation in her kitchen with ultra violent results. At first annoyed by their squeaks, she stomps these critters to death with undue cruelty, as explicit a foreshadowing of what’s to come as it gets. Then again, to even have that brief moment work as a metaphor means equating the likes of Memo (Josue Aguirre), Alejandro (Rigo Sanchez), Hector (Roberto Sanchez) and Tonio (Thomas Chavira) to vermin, which can feel like treading a fine line between an all too facile way of playing into anti-immigrant rhetoric and all-out redeploying it. Similarly, an early moment when Hector quips that “gringos warn their children to stay away from white vans. We’re the only ones who jump into them, ” when talking about what it means for day laborers to blindly trust those who employ them, too glibly underlines the very themes the film is tackling: the constant fear that grip undocumented workers who take such jobs. Later still, they’ll stress again how the fear goes both ways: it takes trust to bring someone to your property; it takes trust to believe you’ll be paid. Courtesy of Vital Pictures. If Beneath Us lacks nuance, it is by design. Collins’ Liz is as cartoonish a villain as you’re likely to find, a hollow monstrous idea of what happens when white Americans fail to see the humanity of those they exploit. Her placid white liberalism hides a disdain for the Other; moreover, she thrives knowing how much power she has over these helpless men whom she’s ready to shoot, stomp and kill as needed. In contrast to her big performance, Aguirre and Sanchez are particularly affecting in their roles, managing to deepen characterizations that feel too thin on the page. On paper, this is all a fascinating premise for a horror movie, especially once the film leans into its slasher-cum-home-invasion genre trappings (expect lots of gore amid claustrophobic scenarios that do make Memo and Alejandro feel like vermin in the eyes of their captors). Overall, though, Beneath Us  coasts on its shocking ideas alone, rarely making what would be a pulse-pounding thriller anything more than fodder for online outrage campaigns. Neither as thought-provoking as it thinks it is, nor as powerful a conversation-starter as it should be, Pachman’s modern-day parable is not likely to change anyone’s mind. One need only look at the YouTube comments under its trailer for proof: the use of “undocumented” in the film’s synopsis is enough to send anti-immigrant rhetoric soaring (you can guess what they wish Memo and the others were called instead) while the very concept of the film can only succeed if and when the likes of Alejandro and Memo are seen as people and not (just) as pawns in horrors both real or imagined. That’s a tall order and one which this much too literal project aims for but fails to land. Beneath Us hits theaters March 6, 2020.

Terrible movie that continues to prove my theory that Adam Sandler is forever stuck in the nineties. I haven't seen terrible film-making like this since that decade. The whole movie feels like something that is stream of consciousness, going from one scene to the next, always with some annoying song playing. It feels like some old school of thought of film-making that a song always needs to be playing during a scene, no matter what. It's grating and annoying.
Sandler's character is absolutely unsympathetic. He has a wildly successful high-end jewelry business but can't stop sports gambling. I admit, I like to gamble myself, but I see nothing appealing about sports betting. The only way to win is if you have inside information. Otherwise, it's beyond stupid. The house really always wins.
I just didn't care for the film. All the praise is very suspect, especially about Kevin Garnett's performance. All Garnett does is play himself and yell in the jewelry store. That's it. He really should stick to sports, acting ain't for him.
This is probably one of the worst movies I've seen all year. Nice try Adam.

Uncut Gems, in just 13 hours, reached over 85k votes in r/showerthoughts, lmao. Anyone who knows reddit, knows that isn't a movie sub at all. The poster was obviously a bought stooge with maybe 1 previous post. The post for the movie is gone now after what I'm sure was plenty of reports to admins over spam. Sadly many mods get bought at reddit. And the ones at showerthoughts must be some of the most shameless ones I have ever seen for the whole bunch to allow this.
Love or hate them, hardly any movies get a bigger buzz than from the Star Wars franchise.
