The only one I'm not particularly a fan of is Gin's voice. Its not bad by any means but for an alcoholic bum, the voice doesn't match. I would expect something more gruff and lazy sounding. Satoshi Kon's atypical holiday tale deals with our three main vagabonds and a choice deeply affecting them. Despite what level in life you find yourself, humans share similar basic emotions or feelings. For Gin, Hana, and the less than cheery Miyuki, an unexpected find makes them confront their past whether they like it or not. Memories flow bringing times of happiness, regret, pain, and questions of what could've been. There's a great character richness in this darker, grimier side of Tokyo, but Kon also manages to put in lots of random, humorous events especially by cameos from minor citizens. Plus, how could you not laugh with Hana's feminine wiles and that manly voice! There's a strong sense of karma here with "what goes around comes around. Doing nice things and you most likely will be rewarded. However, turn your back or refusing to help someone in need may come back to haunt you when you are stuck with no one to turn to. Hey, maybe it's never too late to learn a lesson, no matter how much it hurts.

Satoshi Kon's not presenting an Aesop's fable here, but like in life, sometimes doing a good deed is the best reward in itself.

It's quirky and unconventional, and uses seemingly frivolous characters to explore meaningful issues are loss and failure, exclusion and isolation - the despair of defeat, and the possibility of making amends. The trio of homeless characters are themselves quite weird; an aging and fairly ugly transvestite, a runaway schoolgirl, and a drunken gambler who ruined his family. When the film begins they are mired in shame and regret, but by trying to do the right thing with an abandoned baby they reclaim something of their dignity and self-respect. But 'Tokyo Godfathers' is far from schmaltzy or sentimental: there are brutal beatings, gangland murders and the real chance that the unremitting demands of winter streetlife might drag one of the heroes into oblivion. It says much about social exclusion and the steroetyping of the homeless. Genuinely thought-provoking and extremely satisfying - this is one of those 'cartoons' which conveys many complex messages in between some beautiful moments of artistic flair. 8/10 21 February 2018 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase Such a great film that it really deserves a better release than this one - it should be treated with the respect it fully deserves with enhanced picture quality and sound as this version isn't the best Blu-Ray picture quality I've ever seen and the release is a cheaply done one and not much better than DVD to be honest which is a huge shame. The only reason I've given it 5 stars is for the actual film as I'm pretty sure that Umbrella could have done a proper HD Blu-Ray release with a bit of effort, if not then let's hope that someone like All The Anime do a real release as they have done with Perfect Blue (another excellent Satoshi Kon film). When three homeless people in Tokyo find an abandoned baby their lives are turned upside down as they struggle to look after her and find her parents. A variety of seemingly unrelated events come together until the film reaches it's heart warming and satisfying ending. Traipsing all over Tokyo they follow various clues in their hunt for the babies parents, whilst their own life stories unfold before us. The dysfunctional homeless family make for humorous viewing, with an old geezer for the dad, a flamboyant gay man as the mother and a bitter, yet sensitive, girl as the `daughter'. There's makes for a complex but touching family relationship. The animation is very good and whilst not as lush or beautiful as Ghibli films, this is more gritty and realistic. This film has a 12 certificate, but this is an animated film aimed more at adults. The themes, language and some scenes are more adult orientated that other anime films out there. This feels quite bleak at times due to the winter landscapes and muted colours, as well as the storyline in general. But, it is very well made and everything comes together perfectly at the end. If you are a fan of anime films in general then this should please you and if you a fan of Satoshi Kon in particular, then this should leave you delighted. A worthy addition to your anime film collection. It finds the right balance being not too sentimental or moralising. That the major characters are homeless is not an invitation for the makers to preach about society and inequality. They are homeless for different reasons and even though they may have their faults I found it very easy to sympathise with them and like them. They are very human. A 12 certificate is deserved not just because the content involves some quite adult issues but there is no dubbing and subtitles are not every youngsters cup of tea. I found the story quite spiritual with possible divine intervention here and there. But, it is not Christian or Shinto or preaching anything. I did wonder why such a story was animated. But the animation creates an artistic interpretation of reality which is almost subliminal. Every frame of film has been created and analysed to invoke a mood and I was left in a very fine mood indeed with the movie's amounts of humour, pathos and drama balanced in equal proportions. I was looking for alternatives after finishing Studio Ghibli's ouevre and this is the first of Satoshi Kon's movies I have seen - I will be watching more. You no say daddy me Snow me I'll go blame. This film start with a man "Pete" talking on the phone, he sent away his wife "Sofia" to a shelter, and he have a mission to infiltrate the drug dealer with the FBI scene! As turnout, this film is about Pete need to get into the prison to help his mob boss running the drug business, he also need to help the FBI to infiltrate a target criminal in the prison and another NYPD officer "Grens" also suspect Pete murder his colleague! Entire film quite slow and full of boring conversation! The action also not intense and not satisfy! Barely intense scene is, Grens saving Pete's wife and daughter from the killing of a bunch of mobster! This scene have shooting at the leg and at the head scene! A bit bloody! At the end, Pete capture a warden as a hostage, he wearing the warden uniform to distract the police! The police eventually shot dead the warden, Pete survive from the explosion of the gas tank! The FBI agent "Wilcox" helping Pete escape from the ambulance! At the very end, Grens ask Pete to stay away awhile before met up with his wife and daughter! That's it! Another disappointed film.

I used to study this type of activism and I am quite familiar with this story and its character.
This movie was trying to prostrate as it was positively event when the real story was nothing what that movie was made out to be. There is a lot of stories in this movie that needs to addressing to. I'll leave a few examples in here:
First of off, this lady was never had a romance with this Civil Rights activist.
Secondly, the FBI was not harassing her all because of hers political, nor because of hers involvement with Civil Rights, except it was because of her being involvement with a racist black group that was attempting to rob a several business and motivate to kill the enforcement.
Lastly, this lady was arrested for treason, publicity destruction, hatred, and harassing the soldiers whose return from Vietnam.
This movie needs to re-fix with fact-checking, instead of doing it to supports the propaganda.

He shares sketches with Alma of frightening visions he has had, and begins to give them names, including the Birdman, the Insects, the Meat-Eaters, the Schoolmaster and the Lady With a Hat. As his insomnia grows worse, Alma stays awake by his side. One day, an elderly lady stops by the house and tells Alma to read Johan's diary, which he hides under his bed. Alma discovers that Johan is haunted not only by the real or imaginary strangers, but also by images of his former lover, Veronica Vogler. She also reads that Johan was approached by Baron von Merkens, who lives in a nearby castle. The painter and his wife visit them and their household. The basic plot of “ Never Rarely Sometimes Always ” is easy enough to describe. A 17-year-old girl named Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) winds up pregnant in a small Pennsylvania town. Prevented from seeking an abortion by the state’s parental consent laws, she takes off for New York City with her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder), where what they’d assumed would be a one-day procedure winds up proving considerably more complicated. But that synopsis, and the polemical “issue movie” treatment it might suggest, hardly does justice to the surgically precise emotional calibration of writer-director Eliza Hittman ’s exceptional film, which is both of a piece with, and a significant step forward from, her prior youth-in-crisis works “Beach Rats” and “It Felt Like Love. ” At once dreamlike and ruthlessly naturalistic, steadily composed yet shot through with roiling currents of anxiety, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is a quietly devastating gem. When we first meet Autumn – introverted, morose, standoffish – she’s singing a confessional folk take on “He’s Got the Power” at her high school talent show, only for a boy in the audience to interrupt her with a shout of “slut! ” A tense exchange in a pizza place with her ineffectually supportive mother (Sharon Van Etten) and openly hostile step-father (Ryan Eggold) follows, and the fact that her heckler is casually sitting a few tables over tells us everything we need to know about the claustrophobia of her hometown. When she gets back to her bedroom, she takes a look at herself in the mirror, and her eyes naturally turn to the growing bump in her lower abdomen. Autumn finds little help at the women’s clinic downtown, where the nurses are outwardly warm and reassuring, though a close read of their word choices makes it fairly clear where they come down on the Roe v. Wade debate. Since an abortion in the state requires a parent’s permission anyway, Autumn makes some hesitant, though plenty harrowing, attempts to end the pregnancy herself. Fortunately her cousin Skylar, with whom she works at a run-down grocery store, quickly figures out Autumn’s secret. Slipping some $10s from the register into her pocket, she wordlessly agrees to accompany her to New York for an abortion, and they hop on a Greyhound the next morning. Once they get there, they find themselves shuttled back and forth through the labyrinthine corridors and roadblocks of the American health care system, which forces them to remain in the city much longer than they’d bargained for. Not having anywhere to stay, they spend the rest of their trip slogging sleeplessly from one station to another, lugging their shared suitcase up staircase after staircase, and though both girls are in way over their heads, Hittman never portrays the city as a menacing urban wasteland – like so much of the adult world, it’s simply indifferent to them. (Which is not to say that the film is without threats. Throughout, Hittman makes us feel the weight of pervasive male attention. Whether it’s a creeper on the subway, a flirtatious older supermarket customer, or even an ostensibly harmless college kid (Theodore Pellerin) who tries to talk up Skylar on the bus, the fear of men barging their way uninvited into these girls’ lives hangs heavy over everything. ) Hittman’s screenplay is a marvel of economy, never wasting time filling in relationship details or backstories when they can be more powerfully hinted at. Most obviously, we never learn the father of Autumn’s unborn child, though the film subtly offers two possible candidates – neither are good, and one is particularly bad. The scene that provides the film’s title is a gut-churning back-and-forth at a clinic that opens several new doors into even darker chapters in Autumn’s past, all of which are left purposefully, and hauntingly, unexplored. We may not quite get under Autumn’s skin, but that’s by design. It isn’t just that she holds everyone at arm’s length, but that she’s a girl for whom survival is contingent upon compartmentalizing trauma, and Flanigan – a first-time actor – has a disarming way of parceling out tiny fragments of Autumn’s inner life, only to quickly raise her defenses again as soon as she realizes that she’s doing it. Skylar is considerably more outgoing, though she knows her cousin too well to try and draw her out. Indeed, the most eerily magical moments in the film are the ones that show Autumn and Skylar’s almost telepathic communication. With just a shared glance, a squeeze of the hand, or a minute spent applying one another’s makeup in a bathroom, Flanigan and Ryder are able to speechlessly convey things to which other films might devote pages of dialogue – not just reactive emotions, but complex decisions, explanations, assurances. Both performances are outstanding. But what’s most remarkable about “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is the way it manages to honor the gravity of Autumn’s experience without ever sensationalizing it, or allowing the film to veer toward melodrama. It’s clear that taking this trip is one of the biggest, scariest things she’s ever done, but once the film fades to black, it’s easy to imagine Autumn resuming her life more or less the same way it had been before. It’s easy to imagine her never mentioning the experience again, consigning it to yet another of the emotional lockboxes she keeps deep inside. This may as well be the sort of thing that happens to teenage girls all the time. Because, of course, it is. I think school is the main reason to stress, depressions and anxiety in children/ teens because they are being pressured by tests, teachers and lots of homework/ studying.
